Seconds before the show

One picture per month, 10 January 2013

I’ve seen many actors just seconds before the curtain opens. In those moments before the live performance starts, they deal with the stress in different ways. Some are calm and serene and in need of personal space, while a few steps away some others might do push-ups or be jumping around.

Actor Orwi Imanuel Ameh is about to go on stage. A minute before, we were joking and pulling faces at each other, while he was waiting for my signal to start the show. Then he switched focus, he started eavesdropping on the audience and concentrating on his performance. For the few years that I’ve been working in theatre, my observations make me think that whatever the body language and the communication that occurs with actors a few moments before the show, their state of consciousness is usually elsewhere than the here and now.

One picture per month is a monthly mini newsletter by photographer Yiannis Katsaris. We are not a big company so don't expect endless news emails. The newsletter will feature one of Yiannis' recent pictures or one from his archive.
